The teapot is made of Yixing Red clay, called zhuni Clay. Zhuni clay was mined in the Xiaomei kiln in Yixing. As you can see from the picture, the Zhuni has a slightly bumpy appearance. The clay will shine when used. Zhuni is valued for its best flavor. It is also the most difficult clay to burn because it is more likely to break during the firing process.
The pot is called a semi-handcraft because the craftsmen using a mold tool to shape the pot body, with the hand to make the handle and spout, hukou and pot body hole, and the pot body is flat and level. In fact, no machine was used in its shaping, as the tools were used entirely by hand.
Preparation Before Use
Yixing Teapots should be prepared before using them the first time. This is called “opening the pot”. It removes the dust from firing the teapot.
We recommend rinsing the teapot under warm water two or three times, then filling the teapot with boiling water and emptying it out two to three times. After this, the teapot is ready for use.
